SOMALILAND

with WORLD VISION AUSTRALIA
SEPTEMBER 2022

In Septmeber of 2022 I travelled to Somaliland with World Vision Australia.

We captured stories of drought and famine.

We hoped to raise awareness and encourage the Australia government to step up with $150 million in emergency funding.

THE HUNGRIEST PLACE
ON EARTH

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
MATT WADE - OCTOBER 11, 2022

We visited a camp for Internally Displaced People near Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. Its inhabitants are those who have fled drought or conflict or starvation. Often a measure of each.

I was told these camps grow like onions, with new families settling at the outer edges daily. All have lost homes. Some have lost loved ones. Many travel vast distances over hostile landscapes to find this relative safety.

Here at least, they can access safe drinking water and food.

In Beerato Village, local farmers had reforested a desert. They accomplished this incredible feat by using a technique called Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration, or ‘FMNR’.

FMNR restores degraded forests by rapidly regrowing trees from stumps with living roots, through careful pruning and protection. It restores soil fertility, allowing farmers can produce more food and income.

We witnessed first hand, an incredible surge of life in a bone-dry desert and the restoration of hope in a community.
